Sevenoaks trains: both lines closed on Sunday 6 September

Both railway routes into Sevenoaks are closed for engineering work on Sunday 6 September. Southeastern’s planned engineering list for the day shows no trains between Orpington and Tonbridge, and no trains between Otford and Sevenoaks. That is the first Sunday after the schools go back. The bank holiday weekend before it is clear on both lines, as we report in Sevenoaks bank holiday bins, tip, trains and roads.

What is closed on Sunday 6 September

Southeastern’s list for the day names five sections across its network:

• Orpington to Tonbridge
• Otford to Sevenoaks
• Victoria to Herne Hill
• Slade Green to Gravesend
• Sidcup to Dartford

The first two are the ones that matter here. Orpington to Tonbridge is the main line through Chelsfield, Knockholt, Dunton Green, Sevenoaks and Hildenborough. Otford to Sevenoaks is the short link through Bat and Ball that carries the trains via Swanley, and the Thameslink service. Southeastern had not published the detailed Sunday 6 September timetable, or the replacement bus arrangements, when we read its engineering pages on 26 August. Its practice on the closures earlier this summer was to publish the route-by-route detail in the week before, and to warn that bus journeys take longer than the train. (Southeastern, planned engineering work) We could not reach Thameslink’s engineering page today, so its own advice for the Otford closure is not yet confirmed.

The rest of September

The same list gives the other weekends up to the end of the month. (Southeastern, planned engineering work 24 August to 20 September 2026, PDF)

Three things stand out from that:

• The Otford to Sevenoaks link is out on three of the four weekends, including the whole of 19 and 20 September. On those two days the main line via Orpington is not listed, so Sevenoaks itself keeps its London trains.
• The 19 and 20 September work also takes out Bickley to Borough Green & Wrotham, which is the Maidstone East route through Otford and Kemsing. Kemsing, Otford and Bat and Ball are the stations to check most carefully that weekend.
• Sunday 27 September is the only date where the closure is south of the town. Sevenoaks to Paddock Wood and Wadhurst covers Hildenborough, Tonbridge and the Hastings line.

Looking further ahead, Southeastern lists the Charing Cross closures on 10 and 11 October, which we covered in Sevenoaks trains: Charing Cross closure, and a longer Tonbridge to Wadhurst closure from 24 October to 1 November on the Hastings line.

What it means for you

• On Sunday 6 September, do not plan a train from Sevenoaks, Dunton Green or Bat and Ball without checking the day’s timetable first. Both routes are listed as closed, which usually means buses.
• On 19 and 20 September, Sevenoaks to London via Orpington should run. The Swanley route, Bat and Ball, Otford and Kemsing are the ones affected.
• On Sunday 27 September, London trains should be fine, but Tonbridge, Hildenborough and the Hastings line are not.
• Check on the day. Southeastern publishes its detail on the planned engineering work page, and the National Rail journey planner shows the replacement buses once they are loaded.
