Father Christmas Near Sevenoaks: Grotto Tickets On Sale Now

Booking Father Christmas near Sevenoaks is a race, not a browse, and the race has started. Both of the grottos closest to the town, Polhill at Badgers Mount and Coolings at Knockholt, put their 2026 tickets on sale in early September and both are live now. Hever Castle, the one that genuinely sells out, opens general booking at 11am on 30 September. If you want a Saturday in mid December, this fortnight is when you book it.

This guide covers where to see Santa within about half an hour of Sevenoaks, what each one involves, what it costs, and the booking dates that matter. Where a venue still has not published 2026 prices or dates we say so plainly rather than passing off an old figure as current.

Santa grottos near Sevenoaks 2026 at a glance

Polhill Garden Centre, Badgers Mount

The closest grotto to Sevenoaks and the one most local families default to, ten minutes up the A21 at Badgers Mount. The format is a group story or song with Father Christmas, then each child shares their Christmas wishes and gets a present from the workshop, with a photographer on hand. Sessions are capped at about ten children, which is the reason it feels calm rather than like a queue (Polhill).

The 2026 run is confirmed and on sale: weekends from 7 November, then daily from 26 November through to Christmas Eve. Tickets are £15.50 per child, up 50p on last year, with accompanying adults at £2.50 each and a maximum of two adults per child ticket (Polhill on DigiTickets). Booking is online only, not in store or by phone, and changes have to be made at least 72 hours before your session, with an administration fee possible. Tickets went live in early September at 10.30am, with Polhill Plus members given a 9.30am head start (Polhill).

Three details from Polhill’s own FAQ catch people out. Babies and newborns need a full £15.50 child ticket, though they also get an age appropriate present. The photograph is not included: the photographer takes it in the grotto and you decide whether to buy it on the way out. And the booking account is a DigiTickets one, separate from your Polhill Plus login, so members may need to create a second account before the sale page will let them check out. Tickets arrive by email and can be shown on a phone (Polhill).

What it means for you: the adult price is still the thing to notice. At £2.50 a grandparent can come along for pocket change. Nowhere else on this page comes close, and the contrast with Coolings ten minutes down the road is stark. The exception is a baby: Polhill charges the full child price, where Coolings sells a newborn ticket for £6.50 to £8, and budget for the photo on top.

Coolings, Knockholt

Coolings runs Santa’s Woodland Grotto at its Knockholt site on Main Road, TN14 7LJ, ten minutes from Sevenoaks in the other direction from Polhill. Bookings are open and, unlike in August, the prices are now published.

It runs on 21, 22, 28 and 29 November, then 5 and 6 December, then daily from 10 December to Christmas Eve. There is no grotto on 1 to 4 December or 7 to 9 December, which is worth knowing if you were planning the first weekend of the month. Child tickets are £20 to £28 depending on the date, adults £10 to £14, and newborn tickets £6.50 to £8 (Coolings).

The ticket covers a walk through a series of themed festive rooms, where children write and post a letter to Santa and visit Mrs Claus’ Kitchen and the Toy Rooms, a private family visit with Santa, an age appropriate gift chosen by the child from Santa’s Toy Shop, and free entry to Willow’s Birds of Prey and Wildlife Trail, which Coolings values at up to £29.99 for two adults and two children (Coolings).

What it means for you: two adults and one child costs £40 at Coolings on the cheapest date and £20.50 at Polhill, so the difference for a family is real. What you buy for it is the private family visit. If your child freezes in a group, Coolings suits you better. If your child likes a bit of company, Polhill’s group storytime works well and costs half as much.

Hever Castle

The biggest Father Christmas experience within easy reach of Sevenoaks, and the one that needs the most planning. Christmas at Hever Castle runs from 20 November 2026 to 2 January 2027, themed around The Nutcracker, with the castle dressed for a Tudor Christmas and the grounds lit from 4pm. The estate is closed on 23 and 24 November and on 25 and 26 December (Hever Castle).

Father Christmas does not run on every open day, which is the detail most easily missed. The grotto is open daily until 24 December except 25 and 26 November and 30 November to 3 December, the days the grounds close at 6.30pm rather than 8.30pm (Hever Castle). So of the season’s first fortnight, six days have no Santa at all.

The visit is booked separately from grounds entry and starts at a later time than your grounds admission, shown on the ticket. Every child seeing Father Christmas needs their own ticket and must be with an adult holding a Castle and Gardens ticket. Up to four adults can go into the grotto with a group, you take your own photos because no professional ones are taken, and the grotto time on your ticket is when you must arrive, not when you will meet him. Prices for 2026 were still to be confirmed when we checked on 9 September (Hever Castle).

The dates that matter are the booking dates. Annual members get priority from 11am on 23 September 2026 until 11.59pm on Tuesday 29 September, with one checkout each and a maximum of 12 tickets. General booking opens at 11am on Wednesday 30 September (Hever Castle).

What it means for you: the virtual queue is kinder than it sounds, and last year’s advice to set an alarm was wrong. From 11.59pm on the Tuesday, anyone clicking the booking link goes into a waiting room and places are then assigned at random, so joining at 10.59am on the Wednesday is worth exactly as much as joining at midnight. Hever says so itself. What you must not do is turn up after 11am, because by then the whole queue is ahead of you.

The Polar Express at Spa Valley Railway

Not a grotto, a ninety minute theatrical train ride, and the option children remember for years. The Polar Express Train Ride runs from Tunbridge Wells West station from 6 November to 30 December 2026, with the story performed on the moving train by the Conductor, the dancing chefs and the hobo, hot chocolate and a cookie served on board, and Santa boarding to give every child a silver sleigh bell (Spa Valley Railway).

It is also by some distance the most expensive way to see Father Christmas near Sevenoaks. Adults and children pay the same, priced by date and departure time, with 2026 fares running from around £40 a head for quieter slots to over £70 close to Christmas. There are two exceptions worth knowing: under twos travel on a lap for £5, which buys the sleigh bell but no food or drink, and a carer’s ticket is half price for anyone on the highest rate of DLA, the severe disability premium, enhanced rate PIP or holding an Access Card with a plus one (Polar Express Spa Valley).

What it means for you: with everyone else paying full fare, a family of four is a serious outlay. Book an early November midweek departure if you want the experience without the peak price, and note that everybody wears pyjamas, so do not turn up in a coat and jeans feeling smug.

Bewl Water

Santa’s Quest at Bewl Water near Lamberhurst is an enchanted woodland trail on selected dates in November and December 2026. The quest runs just under two hours, and about three hours in total once you factor in the free flow food court and play area. Both ticket tiers include a personalised Santa visit, a gift chosen at the Toy Exchange, interactive workshops and live performances, with the upper tier adding a Mrs Claus meet and greet, a photo, front row seating and merchandise. A maximum of eight people go in to Santa at once, so bigger groups are split across slots (Bewl Water).

There is a discount running with a hard deadline: 10% off child tickets, applied automatically at checkout with no code, ending at 11.59pm on 27 September 2026. Groups of six or more get 10% off the booking, there is a My First Christmas ticket for babes in arms that adds a personalised Santa moment and a toy, and Essential Companion tickets are half price but must be selected at booking, with an Access Card, PIP, DLA or Attendance Allowance shown in advance (Bewl Water).

What it means for you: if Bewl is on your list, book before 27 September and take the 10% while it is there. It is also the one to pick if you are going with another family, because the group discount and the long free flow time make it better value than it first looks.

Groombridge Place

Groombridge runs a full festive day rather than a five minute grotto visit, and has historically included a lost toy trail, craft with the elves making reindeer food, gingerbread decorating, birds of prey shows, a Christmas market and a visit from Father Christmas with a gift, sold as a daytime ticket and a cheaper twilight evening ticket.

As of 9 September its own websites still show a past Christmas programme and no 2026 dates (Groombridge Place). Treat any date or price you see quoted elsewhere for Groombridge with suspicion until the estate publishes its own, and check back in October. Its season is normally a handful of December days rather than a long run.

What about Knole, Chartwell and Bluewater?

A grotto is not part of the usual National Trust offer at either. What Knole and Chartwell do is dress the house for Christmas and run a family trail through the grounds, which is a lovely cheap afternoon but is not a Santa visit, so check the property’s own page before driving over expecting one (National Trust, Knole).

Bluewater runs a large grotto most years and it is about 25 minutes north, but its Christmas page confirms the last season has wrapped and gives no 2026 detail yet (Bluewater). It typically announces in the autumn.

Quieter sessions and access tickets

This is the part venues bury, so here is what is actually published for 2026. Hever Castle is running two SEN grotto experiences, on Saturday 28 November and Saturday 5 December, at 11.30 and 11.45 with a 10.30 arrival in the grounds, tailored to children with SEN requirements. Hever also gives free general admission to carers on a one to one ratio, but non-member carer tickets do not go on sale until the general release on 30 September, and proof of disability is asked for on arrival (Hever Castle).

Bewl Water sells Essential Companion tickets at half the standard rate, chosen at the time of booking with documentation supplied in advance, not on the day (Bewl Water). Spa Valley Railway does the same for carers on the Polar Express (Polar Express Spa Valley). Coolings’ private family visit is the calmest format near Sevenoaks even without a dedicated session. Polhill publishes nothing on this, so ring them.

Booking without getting caught out

Three things to check before you pay. First, who pays: Polhill charges accompanying adults £2.50, Coolings charges them £10 to £14, Hever prices the Father Christmas visit separately from grounds entry, and the Polar Express charges every passenger over two the full fare. Second, session size, which tells you more about how the visit will feel than any photo on the booking page: ten children at Polhill, a private family visit at Coolings, up to four adults in the grotto at Hever, eight people at a time at Bewl, a whole carriage on the train. Third, the day itself, because neither Hever nor Coolings runs Santa on every day its gates are open.

Groombridge Place has not published 2026 dates.

How much does it cost to see Father Christmas near Sevenoaks? The cheapest realistic option is Polhill, at £15.50 per child plus £2.50 per adult, so £20.50 for one child and two adults (Polhill on DigiTickets). Coolings is £20 to £28 a child and £10 to £14 an adult (Coolings). The most expensive is the Polar Express at Spa Valley Railway, where everyone over two pays and 2026 fares run from roughly £40 to over £70 each.

Does Father Christmas come to Hever Castle every day? No. He is there daily until 24 December except on 25 and 26 November and 30 November to 3 December, and the estate is shut on 23 and 24 November. Those are the days the grounds close at 6.30pm, and there is no grotto on them (Hever Castle).

Do I need to stay up for the Hever Castle ticket release? No. From 11.59pm on 29 September anyone clicking through goes into a virtual waiting room and places are assigned at random, so joining at 10.59am on 30 September is as good as joining at midnight. Hever says so on its own booking page. Just be in the queue before 11am (Hever Castle).

Is there a Santa’s grotto at Knole? Not as a rule. Knole dresses the courtyards and Great Hall for Christmas and runs a family trail, but a Father Christmas grotto is not part of the usual programme, so check the National Trust page for the year before you go (National Trust).

Which grotto is best for a child who finds crowds difficult? Hever Castle is running two dedicated SEN sessions, on 28 November and 5 December at 11.30 and 11.45 (Hever Castle). For any other date, Coolings, because the meeting with Santa is a private family visit rather than a group (Coolings).
