Sevenoaks switches its Christmas lights on at 4.30pm on Saturday 28 November 2026. The event itself runs from 3pm to 5.30pm on the High Street, and the road closes a good deal earlier than most people expect.

Sevenoaks Town Council has published the date, the times and the closure. It has not yet published a programme, so the stage times and the grotto arrangements are still to come.

The timings that matter

The whole afternoon is built around one moment at 4.30pm, but the road closure starts three hours before it.

  • 1.30pm The High Street and part of Akehurst Lane close to traffic
  • 3pm The switch-on event opens
  • 4.30pm The Mayor of Sevenoaks switches on the lights
  • 5.30pm The event finishes
  • 7pm The roads reopen

Every one of those times is from the town council’s own listing for the event (Sevenoaks Town Council).

What is on

The town council lists live entertainment, fairground rides, a Santa’s Grotto, stalls, food and drink, and street entertainment (Sevenoaks Town Council). Entry is free and nothing is ticketed in the listing.

The council has not published a running order, the grotto’s opening hours, or whether the grotto charges. In past years those details have appeared closer to the date. We will add them here when they do.

What it means for you: turn up from 3pm if you want the rides and the stalls, or from about 4pm if you only want the switch-on. The 4.30pm moment is the busiest point of the afternoon by a distance.

The road closure, and where to park

The High Street and part of Akehurst Lane are shut from 1.30pm to 7pm. The council’s listing does not say which section of the High Street, and it does not name a diversion route.

That matters for three groups of drivers:

  • anyone who normally parks on the High Street itself
  • anyone driving through the town centre between 1.30pm and 7pm
  • anyone collecting from a High Street shop late on the Saturday afternoon

We have not seen a published bus diversion for the afternoon. If you are travelling in by bus, check with the operator on the day.

The rest of the Sevenoaks Christmas season

The switch-on is the opening night rather than the whole season. Two other town-centre fixtures follow it.

The Bligh’s Walk Christmas market. The town council runs it daily through the fortnight before Christmas. Its 2026 dates were still not listed on the council’s events calendar when we checked on 22 September, and the calendar showed only one December entry.

The Holly Party on Friday 11 December. Sevenoaks Town Team runs a shared Christmas party at the Bat and Ball Centre from 7.30pm to 11pm, with a live band and a buffet. Tickets are £28 plus a booking fee (Sevenoaks Town Council).
