Rugby: new captain for the league opener

Sevenoaks RFC’s league season starts on Saturday at Knole Paddock, at home to Maidenhead, with a 3pm kick-off.

Olly Green will lead the side. The club named him 1st XV captain for 2026-27 on Thursday. (Sevenoaks RFC, Olly Green Named 1st XV Captain, 24 September 2026)

He takes over from Scott Sedgwick, who captained the team for the past two seasons. The club says Sedgwick has been at Sevenoaks for more than ten years and was part of three promotions.

Director of Rugby Adam Bowman said: “Olly will give everything to the role. He has the full support of the coaches and the squad.”

Of Sedgwick, he said: “Scotty remains one of the most important leaders in our squad and a key member of our player leadership group.”

A late start, and a live stream

Bowman’s programme notes for Saturday say pre-season was “extended by the delayed start to the league campaign”. The squad has been training since June, often with 50 to 60 players. (Sevenoaks RFC, From the Touchline)

The 2nd and 3rd XVs also start their league seasons on Saturday, away at Beccehamian and Gravesend.

Anyone who cannot get to the Paddock can watch online. The club will stream the Maidenhead game on YouTube, with coverage from 2.15pm. It plans to stream every 1st XV game, home and away, this season. (Sevenoaks RFC, Watch the Oaks Live Online)

Saturday’s match-day details are in our weekend guide. We will have both results in next Friday’s sport round-up.
