Remembrance Sunday falls on 8 November in 2026, and the Sevenoaks war memorial will be freshly restored for it. The town council had bronze specialists clean and repatinate the statue in September, work that was partly needed because corrosion had begun to obscure some of the names.

What is not settled yet is the day itself. On 22 September the town council’s events calendar listed eight events between 11 November and 11 December, and Remembrance Sunday was not among them.

  • Sunday 8 November 2026 is Remembrance Sunday, the second Sunday of the month
  • Wednesday 11 November 2026 is Armistice Day

The Royal British Legion observes a two-minute silence on Armistice Day at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month (Royal British Legion). The national two-minute silence on Remembrance Sunday is held at 11am.

Where the service is held

The Sevenoaks war memorial stands on the Vine, on Dartford Road, TN13 3TB. Sevenoaks Town Council maintains it and arranges the annual Remembrance service with the Royal British Legion (Sevenoaks Town Council).

It is a Grade II listed structure, unveiled on 29 October 1920 and designed by A.G. Walker of Chelsea. A bronze soldier in khaki rests his hands on an upturned rifle above a splayed rectangular pedestal. The names of 226 fallen appear on its four sides, with bronze reliefs of Navy and Air Force wartime scenes on the north and south faces. A further extension to the pedestal records the names of those who fell in the Second World War.

The memorial was paid for by a house-to-house collection that raised over £5,000. Lord Sackville, Lt Col J D Laurie and the Bishop of Rochester attended the unveiling (Sevenoaks Town Council).

The restoration, and why it was needed

The town council announced the work on 10 September 2026. Corrosion on the bronze statue was staining the granite pedestal and obscuring some of the names.

It instructed bronze specialist Antique Bronze to do four things:

  • remove dirt, grime and failed wax coating using a superheated water system
  • thin the corrosion layer with gel cleaning and prepare the surface for repatination
  • repatinate the bronze to its original dark coin shade
  • apply microcrystalline wax and buff it to a soft satin finish

The council said the work would start in September and take around two weeks (Sevenoaks Town Council). On that timetable it finishes well before 8 November.

What it means for you: if you visited the memorial in the summer and found a name hard to read, it should be legible again this November.

What has not been published

As of 22 September 2026, none of the practical detail for the Sevenoaks service is out. That includes:

  • the time the service begins and the time of the parade
  • the parade route and where it forms up
  • which roads close, and for how long
  • whether the Poppy Appeal has a town-centre presence and where

We checked the town council’s events calendar, which covers 11 November to 11 December and carries no Remembrance entry, and its news page. In past years these arrangements have appeared in late October. We will add them to this page as soon as they do.

The village services are in the same position. Otford Parish Council and Westerham Town Council had published nothing about Remembrance Sunday 2026 on their own websites when we checked on 22 September.

Attending: the practical points

The Vine sits on the north side of the town centre, off Dartford Road and a short walk from the High Street. Two things are worth planning around even before the road closures are published.
