Buses replace trains between Tonbridge and Wadhurst for nine days from 24 October, covering all of half term. Sevenoaks keeps its London trains: what changes and when.
The Hastings line will close between Tonbridge and Wadhurst for nine days over October half term, with rail replacement buses running from Saturday 24 October to Sunday 1 November. On the final day the closure stretches further, to Battle. Network Rail and Southeastern announced the work on Tuesday. Sevenoaks keeps its trains throughout: services between Tonbridge and Charing Cross run normally during the nine days, and so do trains from Tonbridge towards Redhill, Ramsgate and Dover Priory. The closure bites anyone in the district heading to High Brooms, Tunbridge Wells or beyond, who will be on a bus from Tonbridge for the whole of half term. Before that, there is a one-day preview. On Sunday 27 September, separate engineering work at Tonbridge means Hastings line trains from Charing Cross terminate at Sevenoaks, with buses running between Sevenoaks, Tonbridge, Paddock Wood and Wadhurst. Why the line is closing
The main job is renewing worn slab track in Grove Hill Tunnel, just south of Tunbridge Wells. Slab track is fixed to concrete foundations rather than laid on ballast, which is why replacing it needs a sustained closure rather than a run of overnight possessions. Network Rail says it is packing other work into the same nine days, including:
- maintenance and structural inspections in Wadhurst Tunnel
- earthworks and drainage checks near Stonegate
- new power equipment at Etchingham, plus station canopy repairs and bridge inspections
- track renewal around Robertsbridge and Mountfield, and a tunnel inspection there
- vegetation management and drainage work along the route
Scott Brightwell, Southeastern’s Director of Safety and Performance, said: “This programme of work represents another important investment in the Hastings line, helping us to deliver a more reliable railway for passengers and freight customers across Kent and East Sussex.” He asked passengers to “plan ahead and leave more time to travel as rail replacement buses will take longer than the train”. Sunday 27 September: Sevenoaks becomes the railhead
The 27 September work is at Tonbridge itself, and it reshapes more than the Hastings line for the day:
- Hastings line trains from Charing Cross run only as far as Sevenoaks
- Buses link Sevenoaks, Tonbridge, Paddock Wood and Wadhurst
- Additional trains run between Wadhurst and Hastings
- Ramsgate and Dover Priory services divert via Maidstone East
- Southern’s Edenbridge to Tonbridge trains are replaced by buses
That last point matters in the west of the district: Edenbridge and Penshurst lose their trains towards Tonbridge for the day. (Network Rail, Hastings line closure announcement)
What it means for you
The nine days run from Saturday 24 October to Sunday 1 November, which covers the whole of the Kent school half term and the weekends either side. Our October half term guide lists what is on locally that week; if the plan was a day out by train to Hastings or the 1066 country, it will involve a bus from Tonbridge.
Practical points from the announcement:
- Trains between Sevenoaks and London are unaffected by the October closure. Check Sevenoaks trains to London for the normal pattern.
- Tonbridge station is expected to be very busy while the buses run, and car parks at Etchingham, Robertsbridge, Stonegate and Wadhurst are partly given over to bus operations. Tunbridge Wells and Frant lose some parking to the construction work itself.
- Tickets are being accepted on alternative routes: between Hastings or Ore and Ashford International, on high-speed services from Ashford to St Pancras, and on Southern’s Uckfield line, though that runs at a reduced frequency during half term.
- Assisted travel can be booked in the usual way.
- Before travelling on any of the affected days, check your journey on National Rail Enquiries.
