Garden centres near Sevenoaks: hours, cafes, dogs compared

There is no garden centre in Sevenoaks itself, but there are five worth the drive within about 15 minutes of the town, and they are not interchangeable. Two are proper nurseries that grow much of what they sell, one is a big lifestyle store with a bird of prey trail behind it, one is the family favourite for Sunday lunch and a Christmas grotto, and one is a small plant-only nursery on a common above Ide Hill. Whether you can bring the dog also depends entirely on which one you pick.

This page compares the garden centres near Sevenoaks on the things you actually need before you set off: opening hours (Sunday ones especially), what the cafe does and when it stops serving, dog rules, and what each place is really for. Every hour and rule below was taken from the garden centre’s own website on 15 August 2026, and where a centre publishes nothing we could check, we say so rather than guess.

The five at a glance

Drive times from the town centre are all short and all approximate: Polhill and Coblands are about ten minutes, the two Coolings sites ten to fifteen, Newlands about fifteen. Two more, Greenacres at Ightham and Woodlands at Ash, are covered at the end because neither publishes hours we could verify at first hand.

Coolings, The Gardener’s Garden Centre, Knockholt

If you want plants rather than scatter cushions, this is the one. Coolings’ original site on Rushmore Hill is built around a 4.5-acre production nursery, and the company says 65 per cent of the plants it sells are grown on site, laid out across three acres of display beds: herbaceous perennials, shrubs, bedding, trees and fruit trees, climbers, heathers, roses, acers and alpines (Coolings). Coolings puts a five-year guarantee on its plants and runs RHS-approved courses from an on-site education centre (Coolings).

Hours are 9:00 to 17:00 Monday to Saturday and 9:00 to 16:30 on Sunday, and it is worth noting that 9:00 Sunday start, an hour earlier than the big-box centres. The restaurant is Arthurs: breakfast is served until 11:15, lunch until 15:00, and cakes and drinks until 30 minutes before the centre closes (Coolings).

Dogs on leads are welcome throughout the centre. Inside Arthurs they are limited to the designated rear covered seating area and the outside patios (Coolings). Address: Coolings Nurseries, Rushmore Hill, Knockholt, TN14 7NN, 01959 532269.

Coolings Lifestyle, Knockholt

A couple of minutes away on Main Road, Coolings Lifestyle is the other half of the operation and a different kind of shop: gifts, houseplants and ornamental pots, garden furniture and barbecues, homeware and kitchenware, a COOK freezer, wine, and a Christmas shop that opens from October to December (Coolings). It also hosts Phoebes Landscapes for garden design, London Stone for paving, Crane Garden Buildings and a Hot Spring World hot tub showroom, so it is where you go for the hard landscaping decisions.

The reason families come, though, is the Willows Bird of Prey and Wildlife Trail behind the store, and the Blueberry Café, which does breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea seven days a week with last orders 30 minutes before closing. Hours are 9:00 to 17:00 Monday to Saturday and 10:00 to 16:30 on Sunday, tills from 10:30 (Coolings).

Dogs on a lead are welcome in the store and in designated seating in the Blueberry Café, but not on the bird of prey trail, which is a sensible rule given what lives there (Coolings). Polhill Garden Centre, Badgers Mount

Polhill is the big one, on the A224 London Road at Badgers Mount, family run since 1964, and the default for a Sunday wander for a lot of Sevenoaks households. The departments are plants, houseplants, garden care, a barbecue showroom, a garden furniture showroom, stoneware, gifts and homeware and wild bird care, plus a YETI shop, and it hosts concessions including Cotton Traders, Pavers, Klass, Daro furniture, Hot Tub Barn and a Maidenhead Aquatics (Polhill).

It opens later than Coolings’ Gardener’s Garden Centre on a Sunday and closes later than everyone on a weekday: 9:00 to 17:30 Monday to Saturday, 10:00 to 16:30 Sunday with tills from 10:30. Novell’s Restaurant runs 9:00 to 17:00 Monday to Saturday and 10:00 to 16:00 Sunday, there is a Coffee Corner in the houseplant department, and a ticketed Tiki Hut afternoon tea (Polhill; Polhill).

The rule that catches people out: Polhill does not admit dogs. Its policy allows guide and assistance dogs only; other dogs may be in the car park and outdoor grounds but not in any building, covered area or retail unit, and the centre asks owners not to leave dogs in cars (Polhill). Coblands Garden Centre, Sundridge

West of town off the A25, Coblands sits on an old tree nursery on Dryhill Lane and has been supplying gardeners since 1963. It is smaller and quieter than Polhill and pitches itself at people who garden: trees, shrubs and compost, a houseplant area with UK-grown foliage plants and orchids, an official David Austin roses stockist, and a webshop drawing on its own nurseries and other UK growers (Coblands).

It is the earliest opener of the five: 8:00 to 17:00 Monday to Saturday, 10:00 to 16:00 Sunday. The Cornflower Café keeps shorter hours, 9:00 to 16:00 Monday to Saturday and 10:00 to 15:00 Sunday, so a Sunday afternoon cake stop needs to be before three (Coblands). Coblands describes itself as dog friendly. Address: Dryhill Lane, Sundridge, TN14 6AA.

What it means for you: for an early Saturday run for compost and roses before the A25 fills up, Coblands is open an hour before anyone else.

Newlands Nursery, Ide Hill

Newlands is a nursery, not a garden centre with a cafe, and that is the point of it. It sits on the B2042 at Goathurst Common above Ide Hill, two and a half acres of bedding, perennials, shrubs and trees, much of it grown in its own greenhouses and polytunnels, with tools, seeds and feed inside. Its other claim is Christmas trees: a “You Pick, We Cut” plantation where you choose a growing tree and it is cut for you (Newlands Nursery).

Be aware that its website is not well kept: the contact page gives weekday opening as 8:00 to 17:00 in one place and 9:00 to 17:00 in another, with Sunday 10:00 to 16:00 and bank holidays 9:00 to 17:00 on both, and the home page still carries a Covid notice (Newlands Nursery). Two more that we could not verify

Greenacres Garden Centre, Borough Green Road, Ightham, TN15 9JA. A plant-led, largely no-frills centre with a farm shop, about 15 minutes east along the A25. The company behind it is active at Companies House (Companies House), but it publishes no website we could read, and the third-party directories that list it disagree with each other on its hours, so this page does not give them. Ring 01732 884726.

Woodlands Garden Centre, Ash, near Wrotham. A large family-run centre with a restaurant, around 25 minutes away, so at the edge of “near Sevenoaks” anyway. Its website blocks automated checks, so we could not confirm its hours or dog policy at first hand and have left them out rather than copy a directory.

Sunday hours, and why the tills open at 10:30

Sunday trading law limits large shops in England to six hours’ opening, which is why Polhill and Coolings Lifestyle both open the doors at 10:00 but do not start the tills until 10:30: you can browse and have a coffee, but you cannot pay for a plant until half past. Coolings’ Gardener’s Garden Centre and Coblands publish a straight 9:00 or 10:00 opening with no such note. If a Sunday morning purchase before 10:30 matters, Rushmore Hill is the safe choice.

Getting there without a car

Realistically these are car trips: all five sit on A-roads or lanes outside the town, and none is a comfortable walk from Sevenoaks station. Where are the plants actually grown locally? Coolings’ Gardener’s Garden Centre grows about 65 per cent of what it sells on its own 4.5-acre nursery (Coolings); Coblands and Newlands both sell from their own nurseries alongside bought-in stock (Coblands; Newlands Nursery).

Which is best for children? Coolings Lifestyle, for the Willows Bird of Prey and Wildlife Trail behind the store, and in December both it and Polhill run Father Christmas grottos (Coolings).
