Afternoon Tea in Sevenoaks: The Best Places in 2026

Search for afternoon tea in Sevenoaks and you get a strange answer. OpenTable lists two restaurants for the whole town, and the round-ups that go wider tend to be out of date: several still send you to Hever Castle, which stopped serving afternoon tea to day visitors and now only does it as a private hire (Hever Castle). The real picture is better than either version: a proper hotel tea just outside town, a patisserie in the town centre that will build you a tiered stand from its own counter, and a run of castle, vineyard and garden tea rooms within twenty minutes’ drive, several of which need booking days rather than hours in advance.

Dulce’s Patisserie, Bligh’s Meadow

The closest thing the town centre has to a destination afternoon tea. Dulce’s is a working French patisserie at 1-2 Brewery Lane, between Bligh’s Meadow and the High Street, making its macarons, quiches and pastries on site each day. The afternoon tea is built from that same counter, so you get the macarons and the opera cake rather than a generic hotel selection, and the gluten-free peanut butter brownie has a Great Taste award behind it (Visit Sevenoaks; Bligh’s Meadow).

It is a small shop, so the tea has to be booked rather than walked into. Ring 01732 451779 or message them through Instagram, where the current cabinet is usually on show.

Café on the Vine

Not an afternoon tea in the tiered-stand sense, but worth knowing about if you want tea and cake with a view. The café sits between the Vine Gardens and the Vine cricket ground, is run by Sevenoaks Town Council, and keeps much longer hours from May to September than it does in winter. Check the café’s own site before a winter visit, because from November to March it opens on Friday, Saturday and Sunday only, and only for part of the day.

Hotel and pub teas within a short drive

Donnington Manor Hotel, Dunton Green

The most conventional full afternoon tea near the town, and the only one nearby that publishes a full price list. The hotel is a 15th-century manor on London Road at Dunton Green, just north of the town, and serves tea daily from midday to 5pm: cream tea at £12.50, the traditional tea at £27.95, and a prosecco version at £34.95 (Donnington Manor). Booking goes through the Chartwell Restaurant’s online system.

The Chaser Inn, Shipbourne

A country pub on Stumble Hill that has added a pastry-chef-made afternoon tea to its regular menus: finger sandwiches, scones with Cornish clotted cream and a sweet selection, with the tea list run properly rather than as an afterthought (The Chaser Inn). No price is published on the site, so ask when you book. The kitchen runs from midday to 9pm most days, which makes it one of the more flexible options if you are working around a walk. Tea with a garden or a castle attached

Chiddingstone Castle Tea Room

The prettiest setting of the lot, in the courtyard of a Grade II* castle in a National Trust village. The tea room serves homemade cakes, scones and light lunches to walk-in visitors, but the full English afternoon tea, with sandwiches, cakes, scones and tea or coffee, is pre-booked only, taken in the Castle Tea Room, the Servants Hall or the courtyard depending on space. For 2026 the castle, tea room and shop open Thursday to Sunday from 12 March to 31 October, 11am to 5pm, with last orders at 4.15pm (Chiddingstone Castle). Porcupine Pantry, Penshurst Place

The best-value proper afternoon tea we found. The Porcupine Pantry sits in a converted barn at Penshurst Place and does a pre-booked tea of homemade cakes, sandwiches and scones for £19.95 a head, Monday to Friday between noon and 3.30pm, minimum two people, with a mini bottle of prosecco available for £8 more (Penshurst Place). Emmetts Garden, Ide Hill

Not a booked afternoon tea, but the Old Stables Tea Room is the reason a lot of people drive up here for cake and a scone after a circuit of the hillside garden. Dogs on short leads are allowed in two designated bays of the seating area, which is unusual for a National Trust garden café (National Trust). Tea rooms in the villages

Sally’s Cake Emporium, Otford. A village café at 28a High Street where everything is baked on the premises, with gluten-free and vegan options and a properly dog-friendly room. Two afternoon teas are offered, a standard one and a vintage version served on old china, and the vintage tea needs 24 hours’ notice (Sally’s Cake Emporium). Open seven days.

The Olive Tree Bistro and Tearoom, Otford. Fifty yards up the same High Street, at number 11a, and worth knowing because it is a charity operation: the tearoom sits at the back of the Hospices of Hope shop and does cream teas and cakes at village prices (The Olive Tree). Handy if you have walked in from Shoreham along the Darent.

Twig & Spoon, Ash. At Woodlands Garden Centre on Ash Lane, about eight miles east. £29.95 a head for sandwiches, a freshly baked scone with homemade jam and clotted cream, and a selection of afternoon sweets, served any day after midday. Junior version for under 12s at £16. It needs 24 hours’ notice and a minimum of two, and vegetarian or gluten-free versions need 48 hours (Twig and Spoon).

The splurge: Squerryes, Westerham

Squerryes launched its afternoon tea in January 2026 and it is the one to book if the occasion warrants it. It is served in a parlour looking out over the estate vineyards, runs Wednesday to Friday with arrival slots between 2.30pm and 4.15pm, and costs £55 a head including a glass of the estate’s sparkling wine (Vineyard Magazine). Booking is essential and the estate also has a restaurant, farm shop and tasting tours, so it is an afternoon rather than an hour.

One to check before you travel

Reuthe’s, the Lost Gardens of Sevenoaks at Seal Chart, still appears on plenty of afternoon tea round-ups. Its own website carries a notice that the site closed for major groundworks to protect the gardens, with a stated reopening of March 2026 (Reuthe’s). The notice has not been updated since, so ring ahead rather than turn up on the strength of a listicle.
