Five fire engines were sent to a barn fire in Chestnut Avenue, Westerham, on Monday afternoon after the flames spread into nearby grass. The service’s log shows the call at 13:17. It sent a bulk water carrier and a specialist wildfire vehicle alongside the engines. Crews used high-pressure hose reel jets and main jets to stop the grass fire spreading further. (Kent Fire and Rescue Service, Barn fire in Westerham)

What happened, and when

The service published three updates through the afternoon and evening:

  • Initial update: five fire engines, a bulk water carrier and a specialist wildfire vehicle in attendance; residents near Chestnut Avenue advised to close windows and doors, and asked to pass the advice to neighbours without internet access.
  • 16:16: the fire had spread from the barn to nearby grass, and crews had stopped it going further. The windows and doors advice was withdrawn and the incident was scaled down to two fire engines and the bulk water carrier.
  • 21:00, final update: “Firefighting operations have now finished at the scene of a barn fire in Westerham. There were no reported injuries and the cause is not known.”

Chestnut Avenue is at Westerham Hill, in the north of the parish near the Surrey border, about two miles from the town centre and surrounded by farmland. The service has not said which barn was involved or who owns it, and we have not named a property.

A dry summer, and a fire that reached the grass

The detail that matters in this log is that the fire got out of the barn and into the grass, and that the service sent a wildfire vehicle and a bulk water carrier from the first call. That is how Kent Fire and Rescue has been responding to open-ground fires all summer.

Kent is still in drought. The district’s largest open-ground call of the summer was the Edenbridge wildfire in Hever Road on 25 July, when ten engines were sent. What it means for residents

  • The advice to keep windows and doors shut has been lifted. It applied from the first call until 16:16 on Monday, and the service said it no longer applies.
  • Nobody was hurt, and the cause has not been established. The service’s log does not say whether an investigation is under way, so treat any explanation you hear locally as unconfirmed until Kent Fire and Rescue or Kent Police publish one.
