All 25 food hygiene inspections published for the Sevenoaks district in July 2026 resulted in a rating of 5. Across the whole register, 673 of 852 rated premises hold the top score.
Every one of the 25 food hygiene inspections published for the Sevenoaks district in July 2026 produced a rating of 5, the top score. That is the picture from the Food Standards Agency’s open data, which we pulled directly from the FSA’s ratings API for the Sevenoaks authority on 4 August 2026.
The 25 cover a fair cross section of how people in the district actually eat: six restaurants, cafes and canteens, five schools and colleges, four other catering premises, three care premises, two takeaways, two mobile caterers, a supermarket, a pub and an importer. (Food Standards Agency, food hygiene rating data API, Sevenoaks authority)
A rating of 5 means hygiene standards were found to be very good at the time of the inspection. It is not a rating of the food, the cooking or the service. The officer checks three things: how hygienically the food is handled, meaning how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored; the physical condition of the business, including cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and pest control; and how the business manages its own ways of keeping food safe, looking at processes, training and systems. The district as a whole
A clean month is not a fluke here. The Sevenoaks register holds 952 premises in total. Of those, 852 carry a rating, 58 are awaiting their first inspection and 42 are exempt. Exempt does not mean uninspected. It is the category the FSA uses for businesses that are low risk to public health and that customers would not generally recognise as food businesses at all, its own examples being newsagents, chemists and visitor centres selling pre-wrapped goods that do not need refrigeration. Those premises are still inspected by the council; they are simply not given a score. (Food Standards Agency, Food Hygiene Rating Scheme guidance for businesses)
Of the 852 rated premises, 673 hold a 5 and 113 hold a 4, as the chart at the top of this page sets out. That is 92 per cent at 4 or better. At the other end, 47 hold a 3, 14 hold a 2, four hold a 1 and one holds a 0.
The register is a live document rather than a scoreboard, and we are not naming the 19 premises currently sitting below a 3. A rating records one inspection on one day, and a business that scores badly has three routes open to it under the scheme’s safeguards: it can appeal in writing within 21 days of being told its rating, it can post a right to reply that is published on the FSA site next to the rating, and once it has made the improvements it can ask for a re-visit and a new rating. Anyone who wants to see the low scores can look them up in seconds, because the whole register is public.
What it means for you
Check the place before you book, not after. Search the FSA register by business name or postcode and you get the rating, the date of the inspection that produced it, and the three component scores behind it. The date matters as much as the number. A 5 from four years ago tells you less than a 4 from last month, and the oldest live rating on the Sevenoaks register dates from July 2013, held by a premises that has not been due a re-inspection since. Inspection frequency follows risk. Intervals run from six months for the highest risk businesses to two years for lower risk ones, judged on the type of food handled, the number and type of customers, the processes carried out and the standards found last time. (Food Standards Agency, Food Hygiene Rating Scheme guidance for businesses)
Two practical points. First, the rating belongs to the premises and the operator, so when a pub or cafe changes hands the new business is inspected afresh and shows nothing on the register until that happens; if a place you know has reopened under new management and has no rating, that is usually why. Second, businesses in England do not have to display the sticker, unlike in Wales and Northern Ireland where the scheme is set in law, so an empty window does not mean a bad score. Look it up rather than assume. (Food Standards Agency, Food Hygiene Rating Scheme guidance for businesses)
If you think standards at a food business in the district have slipped, the enforcing authority is Sevenoaks District Council, not the FSA, and concerns go to its environmental health team. (Sevenoaks District Council, Report food hygiene concerns about a food business)
