Late-published FSA data adds seven sub-5 scores to July, including a 1 on London Road and a 2 for a school caterer at Eynsford. August so far: eight 5s.
July was not the clean sweep it first appeared. When we reported the district’s July food hygiene inspections on 4 August, the register showed 25 ratings for the month and every one was a 5. The register now shows 38 ratings dated July, and seven of the late arrivals scored below the top mark. (Food Standards Agency, food hygiene rating data API, Sevenoaks authority)
The gap is how the scheme publishes. A business given a rating below 5 has 21 days to appeal before anything appears, so top scores surface almost immediately while lower ones follow weeks later. The full picture only settles once the appeal windows close, which is why we are returning to July now.
The seven July ratings published late
All figures are from the FSA register for the Sevenoaks authority, pulled on 2 September 2026:
- Niihaw, 205 London Road, Sevenoaks: rated 1 on 14 July. The register records food handling as “improvement necessary”, the condition of the building as “generally satisfactory” and management of food safety as “major improvement necessary”. (FSA register, Niihaw)
- Caterlink @ Anthony Roper Primary School, High Street, Eynsford: rated 2 on 8 July. This rating belongs to Caterlink, the contract caterer running the school kitchen, not to the school itself. Food handling was “very good” and management “good”; the score that dragged the rating down was the condition of the facilities, recorded as “improvement necessary”. - Qissa, 4 Carlton Parade, St Johns Hill, Sevenoaks: rated 3 on 22 July, “generally satisfactory” in all three areas. (FSA register, Qissa)

A rating records one inspection on one day, and the scheme gives every business three routes back: an appeal within 21 days, a published right to reply, and a re-visit with a fresh rating once improvements are made. Treat that exactly as July taught us to: it is the early, 5-heavy half of the month’s data. Ratings from August inspections that scored lower, if there are any, would still be inside their appeal windows and will surface over the coming weeks. The district as a whole
The register now holds 953 premises for the district. Of those, 859 carry a rating, 53 are awaiting their first inspection and 41 are exempt. Among the rated premises, 681 hold a 5 and 110 hold a 4, which is 92 per cent at 4 or better. Below that sit 48 threes, 14 twos, five ones and a single zero. The count of premises holding a 1 has risen from four to five since early August; Niihaw’s July inspection is the addition.
What it means for you
Check the place, and check the date. Search the FSA register by name or postcode and you get the rating, the inspection date behind it and the three component scores. Any list of “this month’s ratings”, ours included, is provisional for weeks, so the register itself is the thing to trust before you book.
Businesses in England are not required to display their sticker, so an empty window tells you nothing either way. And if a place has recently changed hands it starts from scratch with no rating at all until its first inspection. (Food Standards Agency, FHRS guidance for businesses)
