Bewl Water charges nothing to walk in. Parking is 30 minutes free then £8.50 all day, the circuit is 13 miles with three shorter loops, and dogs go off-lead.
Bewl Water is the big reservoir on the Kent and Sussex border at Lamberhurst, about half an hour down the A21 from Sevenoaks. There is no entry fee. You pay to park and for whatever you choose to do, and a walker who arrives by bike or motorbike pays nothing at all (Bewl Water parking).
The site is open daily from 8am and the gates close at 8pm (Bewl Water). Every price and time on this page was checked against Bewl Water’s own website on 19 September 2026.
One thing to know before you plan a trip this autumn: the Aqua Park, the inflatable obstacle course that fills the sailing club end all summer, closed for the year on Sunday 13 September (Bewl Water Aqua Park). From now until spring, Bewl is a walking, cycling, playground and cafe day out, and a cheaper one for it.

Parking is the only fixed cost
The car park is cashless and runs on RingGo, site code 50900. The tariffs are simple (Bewl Water parking):
- first 30 minutes free
- up to 1 hour, £4.00
- 1 to 4 hours, £6.50
- all day, 6am to 8pm, £8.50
- motorcycles free
Bewl’s own page dates those rates to April 2026, so treat them as current but not permanent. If you would come often, a 90-day pass is £50 and an annual pass is £75. The annual one includes 10% off at the Waterfront Cafe, and Bewl’s own arithmetic is that it pays for itself in nine visits (plan your visit).
The walks: 3, 5, 7 or 13 miles
The reason most people go. The trail runs right round the reservoir, 13 miles of it, and Bewl grades the full circuit moderate at 5 to 6 hours (walking trails). Three shorter waymarked routes start from the same main car park:
- Bewlbridge Loop, 3 miles, 1 to 1.5 hours, easy
- Woodland and Water Trail, 5 miles, 2 to 2.5 hours, easy to moderate
- Southern Ridge Walk, 7 miles, 3 to 3.5 hours, moderate
The surface is road stone and loose gravel rather than tarmac, with natural ground, tree roots and the occasional stile, and the wooded sections get muddy after rain (walking trails). Two warnings from Bewl’s own pages are worth taking seriously:
- Some trail sections may close from November until April when the ground is wet, so check before committing to the full circuit in winter (FAQ).
- Wheels-wise, only the stretch from the main car park to the Waterfront Cafe is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Beyond that it is uneven ground and steps (FAQ).

Cycling: bring your own bike and it costs nothing
Riding your own bike on the trail is free once you have parked (FAQ). Hire is on site daily from 10am, with the last hire at 2pm and all bikes back by 4pm, or 3pm in winter. The prices split sharply by day:
- peak, meaning weekends and school holidays: adult £30, child £15, child seat £8
- off-peak: adult £15, child £7.50, child seat £4
Helmets are included and compulsory. On those numbers, a weekday hire is half the price of a Saturday one, which is worth knowing if you can choose your day.
On the water this autumn
The Aqua Park’s 2026 season ran from 1 May to 13 September, so it is done for the year. When it returns it will cost from £25 for a 50-minute session, minimum age 6 or 1.2 metres tall (Aqua Park).
Still running are the open water swimming sessions, every Saturday from 9am to 10:30am at £8 for 90 minutes (open water swimming). The rules are firm:
- pre-booking is essential, and every swimmer does a 10-minute safety induction on arrival, even returners
- wetsuits are mandatory while the water is below 16 degrees, and you bring your own
- a bright swim hat and a tow float are required; tow float hire is £3
- minimum age 14, and under-18s swim accompanied by an adult in the water
Outside those sessions, swimming in the reservoir is strictly prohibited (FAQ). Sailing, windsurfing and wingfoiling hire is listed as “open date TBC” on the activities page, so ring before travelling for those (adventures). Anglers get a long season: fishing runs from 18 March 2026 to 14 February 2027, with an Environment Agency rod licence required from age 13 (FAQ).
With children
The outdoor adventure play area is free with parking (adventures). Indoors, the soft play inside the Waterfront Cafe runs seven days a week at £5 a child for a one-hour session, for ages 0 to 8 (soft play). Dogs have it good here
Bewl is one of the most dog-friendly days out in this part of Kent. Well-behaved dogs go off-lead across most of the site, and there is a self-service dog wash at the Waterfront Cafe for the aftermath (walking trails). The limits:
- on a lead around the cafe, the play areas and livestock
- no dogs in the nature reserve, the children’s playground or the reservoir itself
- no dogs inside the cafe, though the terrace is fine (FAQ)
Bewl also warns dog owners to keep dogs away from still water and bays because of blue-green algae, which is poisonous to them (FAQ).
Christmas at Bewl: on sale now
Bewl’s big winter event is Christmas at Bewl Water, an interactive Santa’s Quest through the woodland on selected dates in November and December. The quest itself lasts just under two hours and Bewl recommends allowing three, and every booking includes a personalised visit to Santa, a gift from the Toy Exchange and one free parking ticket (Christmas at Bewl Water).
Tickets are on sale now through Bewl’s booking site, in two tiers: a standard Grotto and Quest ticket and an enhanced version adding Mrs Claus (tickets). Getting there
Bewl Water is at Bewlbridge Lane, Lamberhurst, TN3 8JH, signposted off the A21 just south of Lamberhurst (plan your visit). From Sevenoaks it is one road: the A21 past Tonbridge and Pembury, roughly half an hour without traffic. There is no station within walking distance, so this is a car or bike trip.
