The win had been coming. The Oaks went into the game on the back of successive league draws against Merstham and Cray Valley PM, but with only three points from their opening five Isthmian South East fixtures.

They led 1-0 at half time and held on after Margate pulled one back. The three points lift them to 15th in the table, with six points from six games. (Isthmian League, Sevenoaks Town)

A scalp worth taking

Margate arrived as one of the division’s form sides. By their own account they had suffered only one league defeat all season, at home to South Park (Reigate) the previous weekend. (Margate FC, Match preview: Sevenoaks Town v Margate)

Margate’s preview also noted this was the fifth meeting between the clubs, with one win each and two draws before Saturday. Sevenoaks now hold the edge.

Cup football is already over for the year: the Oaks went out of the FA Cup 2-1 at Hassocks in August, then lost 3-2 at AFC Croydon Athletic in the FA Trophy first qualifying round. That leaves a clear run at the league.

Rugby’s league season starts at the Paddock on Saturday

Sevenoaks RFC’s league campaign opens this Saturday, 26 September, at home to Maidenhead at Knole Paddock. Kick-off is 3pm.

The club is making a day of it, promising “a brilliant afternoon of rugby, food and hospitality”. A three-course match-day lunch runs beforehand: bar open from noon, lunch served at 1pm, at £30 for members and £40 for non-members including match entry, booked through the club’s events page. Cricket closes with an 11-run near miss

  • The 1st XI fell 11 runs short at Bromley, making 244 for 9 from their 50 overs in reply to Bromley’s 255 for 8.
  • The 2nd XI were bowled out for 182 chasing Bexley’s total and lost by 94 runs.
  • The 3rd XI ended on a win, knocking off London Knights’ 132 all out for the loss of three wickets.

The club’s Play-Cricket page now shows no fixtures in the next seven days, with only intra-club Sunday games since.
