Sevenoaks District Council is running waste, recycling and food waste collections from 6am until Friday 17 July 2026 during the heatwave, and wants bins out the night before. An amber heat-health alert covers the South East from 8 to 12 July.

Bin crews across the Sevenoaks district are starting their rounds from 6am, and will keep doing so until Friday 17 July 2026, while a spell of very hot weather runs across the South East. The council is asking households to put their bins out the night before so nothing is missed if the lorry reaches a road earlier than usual. The change covers waste, recycling and food waste bins. The practical point is the deadline. With crews out from 6am, the council wants everything kerbside by then rather than at the usual mid-morning cut-off. Miss it and the lorry will not come back that day: the advice is to bring the bin in and put it out on your next scheduled collection day. Your collection day itself does not change, only the time the crew may arrive.

Why the times have moved

The council has tied the early start directly to the heat. In its notice it says: “Excessively hot temperatures make working conditions tough for our crews, and an earlier start will give them more time to work in the cooler part of the day.” (Sevenoaks District Council, Early start for waste collections during the heatwave)

The backdrop is a national heat-health alert. The UK Health Security Agency put an amber heat-health alert in place for the South East, along with seven other English regions, from 9am on Wednesday 8 July until 9pm on Sunday 12 July 2026. Dr Agostinho Sousa, UKHSA’s head of extreme events and health protection, said: “Sustained periods of warm weather can result in serious negative health outcomes across the population, so it is important that everyone takes sensible precautions while enjoying the sun.” (UK Health Security Agency, UKHSA updates heat health alerts across England) Forecasters expected highs in the low-to-mid 30s Celsius across parts of southern England during the alert, with the hottest days midweek and into the weekend. Refuse work is heavy outdoor labour, and an earlier finish lets crews get most of each round done before the afternoon peak. The council has run the same measure during previous hot spells this summer, so many residents will have seen the earlier start before.

What it means for you

A few things are worth doing while the early collections run:

  • Have your bins out by 6am. If you normally leave it until you head out, set them out the night before instead. A round that usually reaches you late morning could arrive much earlier.
  • Watch the food waste caddy in the heat. Warm weather makes caddies smell and draw flies fast. Keep the lid shut, line the caddy, and put it out on the day rather than letting it sit. Keeping bins and caddies in shade until collection morning helps.
  • Confirm your day if you are unsure. Your collection day is unchanged, but if you have recently moved or want to check, the council runs a free address checker at its find your waste collection day page.

The 6am start is temporary and is due to end after Friday 17 July 2026, when collections are expected to return to their normal times. (Sevenoaks District Council, Early start for waste collections during the heatwave)
